If you’ve been searching for a clear answer on how old do you have to be to go to the gun range on Maui, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we get at Maui Ammo and Gun Supply. The rules involve a mix of state law, federal law, and our own range policies, so it helps to have all of it laid out in one place.
Here’s what you need to know about how old you need to be to go to a shooting range before you book a session at the only indoor shooting range on Maui.
How Old do You Have to Be to go to the Gun Range on Maui? What Is the Minimum Age?
At MAGS, the minimum age to use the range is 10 years old. That said, anyone under 21 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The guardian must stay on-site for the full session, not just drop off and come back.
If you’re 21 or older, you come in with a valid photo ID and you’re ready to go.
The age and ID rules exist for a reason. Our range is a controlled environment, and we take the responsibility of who comes through the door seriously. That’s not bureaucracy. It’s basic safety.

What Hawaii State Law Says About Age and Shooting Ranges
Hawaii Revised Statutes Chapter 134 allows minors under 18 to use firearms at a target range under supervision. Specifically, state law permits the loan of a lawfully owned firearm to a minor at a target range for target shooting purposes, as long as the loan doesn’t extend beyond the time actually spent on the range.
That’s the legal baseline. Individual ranges like ours can, and do, set stricter requirements on top of that. Our policy reflects both the law and our own standards for a safe, well-run facility.
Can You Go to a Gun Range at 18 on Maui?
Yes. If you’re 18 or older, you can visit the range without a guardian and shoot without any additional supervision requirement.
You’ll need to bring a valid photo ID. You’ll also need to follow our standard range rules: factory-loaded ammo only, caliber limits in effect, proper attire, and mandatory eye and ear protection.
One thing to note: at 18, your firearm rental options are limited to long guns. Federal law restricts handgun rentals to those 21 and older. If you’re 18, 19, or 20 and want to shoot a handgun, you’d need to bring your own legally owned firearm.
Do You Have to Be 21 to Go to a Gun Range in Maui?
No. You do not have to be 21 to visit or use the shooting range on Maui. The 21-year-old requirement is specifically tied to handgun rentals and handgun purchases, not range access itself.
Here’s where that distinction matters most:
Renting vs. Bringing Your Own Firearm: How Age Affects Your Options
If you’re between 18 and 20, you can rent long guns (within our caliber limits) and shoot on the range. Handgun rentals require you to be 21 or older. That’s a federal rule, and it applies everywhere, not just here in Hawaii.
If you have your own legally owned firearm, you may bring it to the range regardless of whether it’s a handgun or long gun, as long as you meet all other requirements and your firearm falls within our allowed calibers and ammo types. Every firearm that comes in must be cased and unloaded.
So if you’ve been wondering how old you have to be to go to the gun range on Maui with your own gun, the answer is 18, or 10 with a parent or guardian present.

Can Kids Go to the Gun Range on Maui?
Yes, kids can come to the gun range. The minimum age at MAGS is 10 years old, and any minor must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for the full duration of their time on the range.
That adult is responsible for the child’s conduct and safety. They can’t just sign off at the front desk and wait in the parking lot.
We want families to feel welcome here. Shooting sports can be a meaningful activity for kids when it’s done right, in a structured setting with proper supervision and instruction. Our range provides exactly that environment.
If you’re a parent wondering whether your child is ready, think about their ability to follow instructions, their physical ability to hold and control a firearm safely, and their overall maturity in a focused setting. Those factors matter as much as age.
